New Mülheim Bridge Initiative

Cologne, January 2026

Dear residents,

Every day, you experience first-hand how the streets of Cologne are significantly affected by traffic noise and poor air quality.

You live in the Clevischer Ring or Bergischer Ring neighbourhoods. According to the noise map published by the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of the Environment, this area of Mülheim is one of the most polluted in Cologne.

Noise map – excerpt Clevischer/Bergischer Ring

Many residents of other streets in Cologne have now demanded that the city take measures to reduce noise. Unfortunately, the city of Cologne only takes action when residents themselves become active.

Just in December 2025, the city of Cologne was ordered by the courts to implement noise reduction measures for six streets:

These are Luxemburger Straße, Lindenstraße, Siegburger Straße in Deutz, Bergstraße and Merheimer Straße in Nippes, Gleueler Straße in Lindenthal and Weißer Straße in Rodenkirchen.

Back in 2022, residents of An St. Katharinen, Mommsenstraße, Krefelder Straße and Clevischer Ring (between Keupstraße and Berliner Straße) were successful.

We would like to draw your attention to the opportunity to make a difference for yourself, the environment and the traffic situation in Mülheim by using the enclosed application form.

Important: Please let us know when you have completed and signed the enclosed application form and sent it to the City of Cologne (by email or post).

Please send an email to:

sprecher@neuemuelheimerbruecke.koeln

stating your name, house number and street, and optionally your telephone number (especially if you have any questions).

We will invite you to a joint meeting (expected to take place at the end of February) to coordinate the next steps. We will also need your contact details for this.

Who we are: The Initiative Neue Mülheimer Brücke (www.neuemuelheimerbruecke.koeln) is a citizens’ initiative that has set itself the goal of reducing environmental pollution in Mülheim and achieving a fair distribution of road traffic on the bridge and the Clevischen/Bergischen Ring after completion of the bridge renovation.

So, if you have any questions, please write to us or give us a call.

Günter Hermkes, Engelbert Becker (Spokespersons)
